Assignment #3 for

CE-263 Environmental Engineering Fundamentals

Fall 1999

Problem 1. Chapter 4 problem 4

Problem 2. Chapter 4 problem 8

Problem 3. Chapter 5 problem 1

Problem 4. Chapter 5 problem 3

Problem 5. Chapter 5 problem 8

Problem 6. Chapter X, 1. Estimate (both analytically and graphically) the pH of 1mM aqueous ammonia solution. The pKa of ammonium ion is 9.3 at 25 degrees Celcius.

Problem 7. Chapter X, 2. What is the pH of 1mM aqueous ammonia solution following the addition of 0.4 liter of 1 mM HCl and 0.8 liter of 1 mM HCl?

Problem 8. Chapter X, 3. A stream has a pH of 8.3and a total carbonate concentration of 3mM. A wastewater stream containing 10 mM of sulfuric acid will be discharged into the stream. What is the wastewater volume that can be discharged , if the pH is not to drop below 6.7? Calculate the alkalinity of the stream before the wastewater addition and after the wastewater addition.
